From Genesis 22:1-18 we see the faith of Abraham and Isaac clinging to the promises of God. You and I are given that same faith in the fulfilled promises of God in Christ Jesus, and nothing in this life can separate us from this truth. We trust in the One "who did not spare his own son."

Tonight we would have read Joel 2:1-19 and 2 Cor. 5:20-6:10. Read it before you hear it. There the Lord reveals two things, that he is mighty and powerful and to be feared, and he is gracious and patient and longs to forgive. Certainly a message worth considering as we begin the Lenten season. Who can endure the Lord's judgment? Only those who stand in Christ!

Our Gospel reading this morning is from Mark 9:1-9. We, along with Peter, James, and John catch a vision of Jesus on the mountain which points us through Lent toward Easter. Though we must walk with sorrow and contrition through the Lenten season, through the cross, it is the resurrection of our Lord that brings new life to the old. In Christ, we have new life.

We are hearing from Isaiah today, chapter 40:9-31. Here the LORD is reminding us of who he is and what he so graciously provides. Trust him, he says. Wait with hopeful anticipation for him to fulfill his promises. Don't go astray chasing idols that wither and fade.

I can think of two things when I consider our freedom in Christ. One is what we should never do because we are free, one is what Paul does because he is free.

Take a look at 1 Corinthians 8, which is our epistle reading for Sunday. Paul is talking about your freedom in Christ, the knowledge you have in the Gospel, and what it means as you live this life of yours. There is a lot at stake, though not for you who are in Christ.

Devotion is more than a thing we do in the mornings but something we are with all we have...we have an "undivided devotion to the Lord." 1 Corinthians 7
